More popularly known as Nostradamus, Michel de Nostredame (1503 – 1566) was a prophet who foretold a number of predictions – many of which we fell witness to in the 20th Century.

The very first edition of his book materialized about 11 years before he died. Since then, Nostradamus and his book have acquired a huge following that believes he predicted numerous world events, hundreds of years before they occurred.

Check out the following 10 Nostradamus predictions that actually appeared to come true:

10. Fire will burn the blood of the just in London in the year 66.
Fire will burn the blood of the just in London in the year 66.

One of the Nostradamus prophesies pertained to a a major fire that hit London, England in 1666. Thisprediction actually came true on September 5, 1666, when the Great Fire of London swept through the English capital and laid waste many great structures. The major conflagration ruined the homes, with approximately 70,000 city inhabitants affected by the fire out of a total of 80,000.

The damaged infrastructures also included St. Paul’s Cathedral and 87 parish churches, 13,200 residential edifices, and many other city buildings. Though the threat of destruction was there, the suburban slums, the Palace of Whitehall, and Westminster’s aristocratic district were left intact.

In the chaos and unrest after the fire, Charles II feared a London rebellion. He encouraged many of the homeless to move away from capital and settle in other places, immediately issuing a proclamation that “all Cities and Towns whatsoever shall without any contradiction receive the said distressed persons and permit them the free exercise of their manual trades.” A special Fire Court was set up to deal with disputes between tenants and landlords and decide who should rebuild, based on their ability or inability to pay.

9. The enslaved people will rise up and rebel against the princes and lords.

The enslaved people will rise up and rebel against the princes and lords.

“Songs, chants, and refrains of the slavish mob,
Whilst the Princes and King are captive in prison,
Shall be received in the future as oracles divine
By headless idiots deprived of judgment.”

The French Revolution (French: Révolution française; 1789–1799), was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France that had a lasting impact on French history and more broadly throughout the world. The absolute monarchy that had ruled France for centuries collapsed within three years. French society underwent an epic transformation, as feudal, aristocratic and religious privileges evaporated under a sustained assault from radical left-wing political groups, masses on the streets, and peasants in the countryside. Old ideas about tradition and hierarchy–of monarchy, aristocracy, and religious authority–were abruptly overthrown by new Enlightenment principles of equality, citizenship and inalienable rights.

8. PAU, NAY, LORON will rise to power.

PAU, NAY, LORON will rise to power.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s rise to power is one of the most famous Nostradamus predictions that came true. What’s even more incredible about it is that the reputed seer actually directly referred to a specific person. If you rearranged the letters of Pau, Nay, Loron, you’ll actually come up with Napaulon Roy. He was one of France’s most well-known emperors as well as one of the country’s most significant historical figures. In this prophesy, Nostradamus states that Napoleon will deny the Piuses entry and that they will be imprisoned. The Piuses being referred to were Popes Pius VI and Pisu VII, who were indeed locked up.

Napoleon is a legacy and is renowned for his contributed to the world’s supply of knowledge through his own writings. During his life he wrote and published many essays, literary critiques, stories, dialogues, pamphlets, as well as his Memoirs, which gave posterity valuable insight into the life of this genius. Tens of thousands of books had also been published about Napoleon, his political influence, and his military tactics. Outstanding commanders, such as Ulysses S. Grant, Winfield Scott, and Robert E. Lee became successful by studying Napoleonic warfare strategies and tactics.

The Emperor of the French altered the social and military paradigms of his day and established an entirely new order that the French Revolution could not have accomplished without him. “Had the Bourbons come back to power in 1799 instead of Napoleon, they would at that time have had less trouble ‘turning back the clock’ to the ancient regime than they had in 1814.”

He also left the world with food for thought and caused us to re-examine our values and become more tolerant and courteous toward fellow human beings. “It is the success which makes great men,” Napoleonstated, rejecting the old hierarchy of birth and status. “High politic is only common sense applied to great things,” he explained, justifying the theses of Paine and Voltaire concerning a universal sense of right present among all peoples and necessary for progress.

7. Pastor will be honored as a demigod.

Pastor will be honored as a demigod.

Though “Pastor” could denote any other brilliant person who carried a similar name, it is mostly believed that this Nostradamus prophesy was referring to Louis Pasteur. Born in Dole, Pasteur was a French microbiologist and chemist who was able to offer the world a number of scientific breakthroughs. Apart from his remarkable discoveries in the management and treatment of puerperal fever, he was also responsible for creating the first anthrax and rabies vaccines.

Considered to be one of the three founding fathers of microbiology, Pasteur also became famous for coming up with pasteurization. This is a process that sterilizes milk and wine and prevents them from causing people to become sick.

6. A child from West Europe will be born. He will seduce a great troop with his tongue, and his fame will spread as far as the East.
A child from West Europe will be born. He will seduce a great troop with his tongue, and his fame will spread as far as the East.

This prediction is clear enough. When one reads this, one almost automatically thinks of Adolf Hitler, who led the German army in a rampage that rocked the entire planet at the time. Head of the state and Chancellor of Germany from the year 1933 to the year 1945, the Austrian-born Nazi Party leader is most remembered (and maybe even most hated) for the major role he played in The Holocaust, the Second World War, and the rise of European fascism.

Hitler was known for his skills as an orator. In fact during the first world war he served as messenger between the front and the command base for Germany earning an Iron Cross in the process. It is said that his regiment once met with a mustard gas attack which affected his voice giving it that weird but intimidating tone he was known for.

The most notable bit however is of Hitler’s impoverished upbringing. He lost two of his siblings when he was hardly three years old. His father regularly beat him and after his death in 1903, his mother also died of terminal breast cancer. Hitler also failed to make it as an artist and was virtually penniless by 1909.

Nostradamus was known to play word games with the names of famous persons in order to confuse those attempting to interpret his prophecies before their time. The word “Hister” is believed to be a combination of two words “Hitler” and “Ister,” thus providing both the name and place of origin of the Nazi leader. The word “Ister” was the Latin name for the Danube River in Germany, on whose banks Adolf Hitler was born.

5. The two greatest ones will be at war with one another

The Second World War was one of the greatest Nostradamus predictions of all time. The “two greatest ones” clearly point to the two great powers that came face to face during that most devastating war – the Axis and the Allies. Throughout history, no war or battle can ever hope to rival World War II. It was during that time that distinctions between military and civilian resources were blurred in order to fuel the fight.

Additionally, it is the only war that ever made use of nuclear weapons. To this day, it is also the most widespread battle, which mobilized millions and millions of military personnel. It is truly amazing that this deadliest human conflict was foretold centuries before it happened.

4. People will be “put out by steel.”

People will be “put out by steel.”

During Nostradamus’ time, the word steel would have pointed to some kind of weaponry. This led the followers of the seer to conclude that he predicted the atomic bombings that left Nagasaki and Hiroshima in state of utter devastation. Though the rest of the Nostradamus quatrain indicate that famine and plague would be responsible for much death, a number of people still believe that the prediction of the aforementioned nuclear attack can still be credited to the world-renowned clairvoyant.

On August 6, 1945, the United States dropped a massive atomic weapon on Hiroshima, Japan. This atomic bomb was approximately 20,000 tons of TNT and flattened the city, killing tens of thousands of civilians in the process. While Japan was still trying to deal with the devastating losses, three days later, the United States struck again, this time, on Nagasaki.

A survivor recount of the events, “The appearance of people was . . . well, they all had skin blackened by burns. . . . They had no hair because their hair was burned, and at a glance you couldn’t tell whether you were looking at them from in front or in back. . . . They held their arms bent [forward] like this . . . and their skin – not only on their hands, but on their faces and bodies too – hung down. . . . If there had been only one or two such people . . . perhaps I would not have had such a strong impression. But wherever I walked I met these people. . . . Many of them died along the road – I can still picture them in my mind — like walking ghosts.”

Almost fifty years ago, the first of two Kennedy brothers were killed in Dallas, TX. Four-and-a half centuries ago, the French prophet, Nostradamus foresaw the death of JFK and his brother. With the coming of a new Kennedy into the White House soon, this sober anniversary requires reflection. So that what happened then, may not happen again.

President John Kennedy was shot shortly after twelve noon on 22 November 1963. Senator Robert Kennedy was assassinated a few minutes after 1 A.M., moments after his victory speech in the 1968 primary in his bid to become president. Jeane Dixon, one of the greatest prophets of modern times, earned international notoriety for predicting JFK’s assassination 7 years before he died. The bearer of the petition could be Dixon. Nostradamus may have chronicled her unsuccessful attempt to forewarn the president, and later, Senator Kennedy, who was her friend. The last line dates RFK’s murder through events occurring around that time: student riots in France and London during 1968-9, (Reims is a synecdoche for France) and the 1966 Florence flood, when authorities feared that pestilence in Tuscany would follow the disaster.

2. Diana’s life will be taken.

Diana’s life will be taken.

Princess Diana of Wales died on August 31, 1997 after sustaining extensive injuries from a car accident in Paris, France. At that time, she was with her boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed, Fayed’s bodyguard, and the driver – who apparently was drunk. The only person who survived the accident was the bodyguard – Trevor Rees- Jones. Earlier, it was thought that the paparazzi were to blame, but a 1999 French judicial investigation conclusion pointed the finger at the driver, Henri Paul. He was found to be under the influence of alcohol, having traces of a tranquilizer and antidepressant in his body, and thereby lost control of the vehicle.

1. Fire from the center of the earth will cause trembling around the new city.

Fire from the center of the earth will cause trembling around the new city.

The full Nostradamus prediction refer to New York City (new city), the World Trade Center (center of the earth), and the Twin Towers (two great rocks). The September 2011 assault on NYC, and the United States in general, was a terrorist attack that led many to over 5000 dead and thousands more injured. It was not just the passengers of the hijacked planes who lost their lives, but also the many people who were in the buildings at the time and the individuals who offered their lives to save these people. The effects of that unfortunate event can still be seen in the way nations at present abhor terrorism.

While scores of critics say that these predictions are quite vague (and maybe they’re right?), the fact remains that plenty of people still believe that Nostradamus was a truly gifted soothsayer.
